In-Depth Information
Both Louisville Gas and Electric Company generating plants were knocked out of service by
the rising water. But once the floodwaters began falling, the company's employees worked
around the clock, many of them sleeping in the crippled plants, and in less than six weeks
had both generators back on-line. Though vastly reduced, some gas service was maintained
during the flood.
The Louisville and Nashville Railroad's Campbell Street Warehouse, at left, stood just one
block from the Ohio River and so was quickly submerged by the flooding. In the background
is the multi-building warehouse complex operated by the Belknap Hardware and Manufac-
turing Company. Its lower floors were also flooded. Founded in 1840, Belknap was once the
largest hardware wholesaler in the world, but years of financial troubles forced it to close
its doors in 1986.
