In-Depth Information
Two rafts are paddled along Louisville's water-filled Central Avenue. In the background,
behind the trees, is famed Churchill Downs. The 1937 flooding submerged both the
Churchill Downs offices and the track, since 1875 the home of the country's best-known
horse racing event, the Kentucky Derby. Local legend has it that some venturesome types
staged boat races on the flooded track. Despite the flood damage, come May, the track was
ready for that year's derby.
