erated the only two trains still serving the station. In 1963, the C&O shifted those to Union
Station. Central Station was demolished in 1968.
As the Louisville floodwaters rose, an improvised pontoon bridge was constructed across
Beargrass Creek. Built by a small army of volunteers under the direction of William S. Ar-
rasmith, a local architect and captain in the U.S. Army Reserves, the makeshift bridge was
fashioned from planks laid on top of whiskey barrels taken from one of the local distilleries.
The 2,000-foot-long span enabled hundreds of refugees to climb out of the busy rescue boats
and walk to nearby dry land.
