grand theater had fallen on hard times and was showing mostly horror movies and “kick
flicks.” It closed in 1981.
An unattended skiff floats in the flooded intersection of Twenty-seventh and Chestnut
Streets. A sign on the building at right, presumably a saloon, advertises Falls City beer.
Beer was brewed in Louisville from the city's earliest days, and it once was home to a dozen
or more breweries. Falls City, founded in 1905, grew to become Kentucky's largest brand,
but, like other small brewers across the country, it could not compete with the big national
brands and was forced to close in 1978.
