(L&N). In the 1930s, more than 2,000 L&N employees worked there. As the floodwaters
rose, special L&N trains shuttled refugees from the flooded downtown to the city's dry
neighborhoods.
Louisville's rising floodwaters trapped 300 guests and 50 employees at the Brown Hotel. It
would be more than a week before they could safely leave. One of the bellboys caught a fish
in the hotel lobby while sitting on the stairs. Owner J. Graham Brown had the fish mounted
and hung on the wall of the hotel grill.
