Originally known as Dunkirk Road and later as Prather Street, Broadway grew longer and
wider as the city of Louisville expanded south from the Ohio River. Over the years, it be-
came the southern terminus of the business district, which stretched along Fourth Street.
This 1937 view of a flooded Broadway was taken looking west from Barret Avenue. From
here, it was a watery five miles to the river.
