Maysville, Kentucky, located at the confluence of Limestone Creek and the Ohio River, was
first known as Limestone. When it was established as a town (1787), it was named for Vir-
ginia surveyor John May. Maysville grew into one of the world's largest burley tobacco
markets. Today it is best known as the birthplace of singer Rosemary Clooney. Each fall, it
hosts a festival in her honor. Here is a souvenir postcard with a view of Maysville's flooded
Second Street in 1937.
Covington, the largest city in Northern Kentucky, stands just across the Ohio River from
Cincinnati and is built primarily on a flat plain. Thus, its streets were quickly flooded when
