The building at the right in this photograph has housed Ashland's newspaper, the Independ-
ent, since 1902. It stands just a couple of blocks north of the Ohio River and so was badly
flooded in 1937, the only time publication of the paper was suspended. Until local opera-
tions could resume, the Independent was printed on the presses of the Big Sandy News in
