Plate 13.19 The Blackhawk Slide, fanning out across the Mojave desert from the San Bernadino mountains (to the right),
southern California. Seen here from 30,000 ft, the lobe is 8 km long, 3 km wide, with a front 35 m high, and consists of millions
of tons of disintegrated marble. The slide occurred 17,000 years ago, perhaps triggered by an earthquake in the nearby San
Andreas fault zone.
