In-Depth Information
Imbrie, J., and Imbrie, K. P. (1979) Ice Ages: solving the mystery, London: Macmillan. A history of ideas about the origins
of recent Ice Ages. Provides a clear account of the Milankovitch effect, though it gives the impression that it must be
the dominant mechanism and other possibilities are subordinate, hence a little dated.
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (2007) Climate Change 2007: the scientific basis, Cambridge: Cambridge
University Press. Latest update of the scientific assessment of climate change. Technical, but authorative, statement
of current views about the nature of current climate change.
Mackay, A., Battarbee, R., Birks, J. and Oldfield, F. (eds) (2003) Global change in the Holocene, London: Hodder. Advanced
text on the subject of Holocene climatic variability. Each chapter is written by an expert in a wide range of themes
within the overall subject matter. Good for reference material.
Oldfield, F. (2005) Environmental Change: key issues and alternative approaches. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
Contains much information about the nature of climate changes and its impacts. Extensive reference list provided for
further ideas.
Wilson, R. C. L., Drury, S. A. and Chapman, J. L. (2000) The Great Ice Age, London: Routledge. A recent addition to the
literature on the Quaternary Ice Age that will prove a useful source of material at the intermediate level.
WEB RESOURCES
htpp://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo A large source of information about palaeoclimatology. The site includes historical
information, proxy evidence of climate change, ice core data and modelling output from climate change studies.
http://www.cru.uea.ac.uk Th e Climatic Research Unit website contains information sheets about aspects of climate change
including current data about the global temperature record for the last 150 years. The central England temperature
record is available on a monthly basis and provides a measure of climate change in the United Kingdom since 1660.
http://www.ipcc.ch Th e website of the InterGovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The latest report is the Fourth
Assessment, published in 2007. It aims to give a very detailed and well argued view of the current state of the causes
and potential impacts of human-induced climate change. It provides a summary for policy makers where details are
not required.
