Plate 7.5 Hurricane Katrina is seen in the GOES image of 29 August 2005 at 00.00 UTC in the infra-red waveband. The image
clearly shows the eye of the storm approaching the US mainland near New Orleans. It is black as skies are clear as far as the
warm ground surface. Around this is a spiral of cloud bands. Katrina was a very big storm and not all spirals affect such a large
area. Convection over Amazonia is noticeable. Other clusters of cloud over the tropical eastern Atlantic show some signs of
tropical storm development.
