Area of study. (A) Location map of the Halten Terrace. (B) Map showing the Mid-Norwegian hydrocarbon fields in
the Halten Terrace. Main oil fields are: (1) Heidrun, (2) Smørbukk (Åsgard), (3) Morvin, (4) Kristin, (5) Lavrans, (6) Smørbukk
Sør (Åsgard), (7) Midgard (Åsgard) and (8) Njord. (C) Map of the Smørbukk field showing main active faults during Tilje
deposition and location of cross-section lines (I, II and III) shown in Fig. 19.
of inferred tidal origin (Martinius
et al
., 2001,
2005). These stratigraphic units form an impor-
tant, deeply buried reservoir interval and are geo-
graphically confined to a NE-SW-oriented belt
approximately 470 km long by 150 km wide. The
hydrocarbon production from this interval is
about 850 BBL (Martinius
et al
., 2005; Norwegian
Petroleum Directorate (NPD) gross production
2010) equivalent per day from several fields on
the Halten Terrace (Fig. 1B; Martinius
et al
., 2001).
However, production is adversely affected by the
heterolithic nature of the tidal facies (approxi-
mately 80% of the total rock volume), deep-burial
digenetic features (present-day depth 1 km to
5 km), fracturing and faulting (Martinius
et al
.,
2005) and the complex internal architecture of the
reservoir units (Ehrenberg
et al
., 1992; Martinius
et al
., 2001). Thus, more detailed sedimentologi-
cal interpretations, coupled with a better under-
standing of the stratigraphic architecture and the
controls on sedimentation, are required both
for individual hydrocarbon fields and at a more
regional scale, if production is to be optimised
(Martinius
et al
., 2005).
In this context, the goal of this research is to pro-
vide a better sedimentological, palaeoenvironmen-
tal, palaeogeographic and sequence-stratigraphic
description of the Lower Jurassic upper Åre and
Tilje formations. This provides, in turn, an improved
understanding of the dimensions and architecture
