In-Depth Information
over outcrop analogues is that the former are cus-
tom made, i.e. they are based on understanding of
the processes that drive the system and their inter-
action. Whilst real-world outcrops are limited in
number and exposure, never exactly fitting the res-
ervoir data, synthetic (numerical) outcrops are fully
three dimensional and represent the known process
and boundary conditions of the specific reservoir.
In addition, by varying the boundary conditions
(e.g. fluvial discharge, basin geometry etc.), uncer-
tainty can be quantified.

CONCLUSION
With increased computational power and a larger
need for quantitative and case-specific information,
physics-based numerical modelling shows great
potential. The conceptual setting of this study illus-
trates the possibilities of the application of the
Delft3D model to investigate the changes in both the
morphology and stratigraphy of a delta subject to
wave reworking. Here, we evaluate the preservation
potential of an abandoned delta lobe by an upstream
avulsion under different fluvial regimes. Wave-
induced currents lead to specific sediment redistri-
bution patterns. Furthermore, combined fluvial and
wave-induced currents lead to an increase in off-
shore transport of fine sediments. Overall, the pre-
served delta, subsequent to being subjected to wave
reworking, shows an increased amount of sand-rich
deposits and an increased connectivity.
