In-Depth Information
The lynx is a top predator in the boreal forest.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the boreal forest food web is the population boom-and-bust cycle that
affects many snow-adapted or snow-dependent species, including snowshoe hare, spruce grouse, voles, and
predatory species such as lynx, fox, mink, and marten. Many hypotheses have been put forward to explain
these persistent cycles, which have been repeating themselves at least as long as there have been observers of
boreal ecosystems. An array of factors have been earmarked as contributing causes: sun spot cycles; weather,
particularly as it applies to snow conditions, fire, and food availability; and predictably, disease and parasites.
