A herring weir stands as a symbol of a productive past and a hopeful future for the Atlantic.
I was on my way to Evangeline Beach, named for the heroine of Longfellow's poem about the Expulsion,
where I was hoping to see shorebirds. Here, they stop over to fuel up for their migration to South America, on
the invertebrate riches of worms and mud shrimp secreted in the tidal flats. It is one of two sites in the inner
bay that have been declared a Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve.
