In-Depth Information
Zonation of salt marsh plants-on the low and high marsh-depends upon the frequency of tidal flooding and the plants'
varying tolerances to salt.
In the low marsh, S. alterniflora creates a natural monoculture, though occasional glassworts grow on bare
sites created by ice scouring, for instance. On the high marsh, the salt marsh hay is joined by a number of other
salt-tolerant plants, such as salt marsh bulrush, marsh elder, sea lavender, seaside aster, and seaside goldenrod.
