In-Depth Information
13.9. Identify four barriers that could slow the large-
scale implantation of clean renewable energy.
3.
Quantify the estimated emission reductions (total
mass per year) in the region of interest of major
pollutants during the next 20 years if the methods
are implemented.
13.10. Identify four methods of reducing the effect of
the variability of wind, solar, and wave power on match-
ing power demand with supply on a continuous basis.
4.
Quantify the estimated reductions in the outdoor
mixing ratio or concentration of major primary or
secondary pollutants in a city within the region if
the methods are implemented. (This requires finding
data on current concentrations or mixing ratios and
using estimates of species lifetimes and of a mean
mixing height.)
13.13. Group or Individual Project
Develop a “white paper” describing and analyzing the
effects on a selected region of three methods of address-
ing global warming and air pollution simultaneously. In
the paper, address the following components:
5.
Estimate the temperature change in the region of
interest, as well as on a global scale (use simple
scaling with global temperature change information
in Chapter 12), due to the changes in emission of
the global warming agents.
1.
Discuss at least three methods of reducing emis-
sion of global warming gases and particles and air
pollution gases and particles simultaneously using
existing or emerging technologies. Such technolo-
gies can include emission control technologies, non-
or low-emitting technologies that replace current
technologies, energy efficiency measures, or poli-
cies encouraging lower emissions. Decide the area
over which you will examine the effects (e.g., city,
state, province, country, or global).
6.
Quantify the health benefits (e.g., reduction in car-
diovascular and respiratory disease, asthma, and
mortality) of reducing the emissions. Use Equation
5.13.
7.
Discuss which industries will and will not ben-
efit as a result of implementing the methods
through regulation. Cost estimates may be given
here.
2.
Discuss whether these methods have been imple-
mented to date, and, if so, what the result of their
implementation has been.
8.
Briefly summarize the selected methods, results,
and overall recommendations in an abstract.
