From Woodlice in Britain and Ireland: Distribution and Habitat , P.T.Harding & S.L.Sutton 1985.
The distribution of these two forms was worked out during the Isopoda Survey
Scheme, launched in 1968, through the use of a recording card listing most of the ter-
restrial and freshwater species and a selection of marine species. There were already
many other similar recording schemes in being, backed by enthusiastic volunteers and
coordinated by the Biological Records Centre at Monks Wood. But this scheme pion-
eered an ecological approach. Instead of simply mapping the distribution of species
on a 10 x 10 km square grid, the isopod record cards listed several major and minor
habitats and habitat characteristics which would provide insight into the ecology of
the species.
