trial wastes and re-covered with subsoil and topsoil. A clay seal was included in the
second half of the site. After installing underdrainage and taking an initial hay crop,
a programme of restorative cropping was started. The complete process on the first
quarter, from stripping the soil to the first hay crop, took three years; the fourth quarter
was stripped in year 5 and yielded hay in year 7. Aftercare and monitoring of the
whole site was then continued for a further five years. Figure 69 shows some of the
stages in this stripping and restoration process.
