culties in relating the scale of biological activities to soil properties. To encompass
the activities of microorganisms, mites and moles, one must range from mineral and
organic particle surfaces, through pore spaces of increasing size, to the large-scale
physical character of soils. This ideal multi-level view of the soil is, unfortunately,
hardly ever practicable but it remains a desirable objective. There is certainly still
much scope for studies of the relationships between species and their soil profile en-
vironment. Meanwhile, this chapter considers some work on the interactions between
soil animals, soil profiles and vegetation, in woodland, moorland and grassland hab-
itats.
