Carbon cycle. Carbon dioxide is assimilated by green plants through photosynthesis and converted into
organic substances. These are broken down (dissimilated) in the respiration and metabolism of plants, lib-
erating carbon dioxide again as the final product. The presence of oxygen affects the course of C cycling,
and its absence allows fermentations to proceed, forming gases such as methane (CH4). (Adapted from G.
