lower part of the Purbeck beds ( a2 ). In addition to mudstones and thin limestones, these
Purbeck deposits contain gypsum (calcium sulphate) which has been mined commer-
cially for plasterboard. All the rest of the bedrock at the surface of the High Weald is
Early Cretaceous in age and assigned to the Hastings Beds that make up the greatest
thickness and lower part of the Wealden Series (Fig. 128).
