Service Animals. A service animal is defined as any animal individually trained
to provide assistance to a person with a disability. Service animals are not pets
and should not be confused with pet sheltering. Plans should include provisions to
determine if an animal is a service animal including
1. Is this a service animal required because of a disability?
2. What work or tasks has the animal been trained to perform?
Service animals provide a variety of types of assistance including guiding people
who are blind or have low vision, alerting people who are deaf or hard of hear-
ing, pulling wheelchairs, carrying or retrieving items for people with mobility
disabilities, assisting people with disabilities to maintain their balance or stabil-
ity, alerting people to and protecting them during medical events, and working
or performing tasks for individual with psychiatric, neurologic, or intellectual
disabilities.
Service animal plans should address areas where animals can be housed, exer-
cised, and toileted. In addition, a reliable source for food and supplies (water bowls,
