Variations on Tabletop Designs and Conduct
Another format can involve not providing the scenario but only providing
portions of the information to particular breakout groups. It will become
their responsibility to make announcements to the room and other break-
out groups that will have to remain in the dark until they are included by
the other groups. This format emphasizes the need for communication and
coordination as well as a practice of roles and responsibilities. If one breakout
group should have contacted another group and has not done so, it would be
wise to give them a clue or a comment to do so in order to keep the exercise
moving forward.
Remote tabletop design allows for agencies and department to participate
without interrupting daily operations. The tabletop design remains the same
except that communication and release of information and issues is con-
ducted through teleconferencing, phones, and e-mails. This style of exercise
requires advance experience and strong control of the activities and exercise
play to ensure that all participants are addressing the issues and topics and
that they are included in the process.
Use video presentations of news flashes or announcements from governors
or officials providing new information for the exercise participants to act on.
