Categories of Tasks
Another way to view the various steps is provided in a matrix of task categories
(Table 10.1).
Major Task Accomplishments
One of the simplest ways to envision the exercise process is by major accomplish-
ments. As shown in Figure 10.2, the process is factored into five major accomplish-
ments that make up the design cycle:
1. Establishing the base
2. Exercise development
3. Exercise conduct
4. Exercise critique and evaluation
5. Exercise follow-up
Each accomplishment is the outgrowth of a set of specific tasks and subtasks (simi-
lar to those listed in the earlier models). The process is circular, with the results of
one exercise providing input for the next.
Types of Exercises
Exercises may range widely in cost, size, scope, complexity, purpose, and approach.
Each exercise should build on the scale and lessons learned from any previous exercises.
There are a total of seven different types of exercises that are either discus-
sion-based or operation-based. A director or presenter leads the discussion-based
