Personal Actions
In the midst of thinking about the danger threatening your community, it may be
difficult to recognize the need to take the time to consider your own and your fam-
ily's needs. Experience has shown that public officials function better if they have
made adequate provisions for their families' safety and to ensure that they have the
personal items that they will need during the incident. The Checklist's third panel
describes these actions.
A description of the personal actions you should take is listed below.
Provide family with contact information— Alert your family to the inci-
dent, and assure that they know how to respond if they are in any danger. Be
sure that they know where you will be and how to contact you. Taking the
time to leave word with your family about your whereabouts and how you
plan to maintain contact will be reassuring to them and to you.
Take your personal survival kit— If you have planned ahead, your personal
survival kit will be assembled and in your car or in another place where you
can reach it easily. Be sure to include any personal items that you may need
should the incident continue for an extended period.
Other things to remember— Jot down other personal reminders in the space
provided.
