Scoring Your Self-Assessment
Obviously, the correct answer for all questions in the self-assessment is yes. To
gauge how well you are doing, give yourself one point for each “yes” answer. Total
your score. Then, grade your risk according to the scale below.
14-15 “yes” answers. Your community's risk is apparently well managed,
but it can be managed better. Look over your “no” answers, and decide what
you can do to reduce these areas of exposure.
12-13 “yes” answers. Your community is making good progress, but there
are a number of actions you can take to reduce your risk. You may wish to
focus your attention on the areas to which you answered “no.” Based on the
results of reviews in these areas, you can decide what additional steps you
need to take.
9-11 “yes” answers. Your community may be at risk, but it is not too late.
Scores in this range suggest that your community's emergency manage-
ment responsibilities are being partially met, but there is room for (and need
of ) improvement. Start today by working with your emergency manager to
improve your community's emergency management program.
Fewer than 9 “yes” answers. Your community is at risk! Prompt action is
indicated. You need to take immediate action to improve your community's
ability to respond effectively to a major emergency or disaster. Begin by con-
ducting a complete review of the emergency management organization, and
take an active role in the review. Review the remainder of this kit , and take the
steps necessary to improve your community's capability.
