These days the Antarctic artists come with many different skills and
backgrounds. Some, such as Philip Hughes, were originally engineers or scientists
and from them can come an analytical clarity of vision that dissects and abstracts
the landscape into its basic elements. Others with interests in geology and
geography, such as John Kelly, see the landscape through its detritus, the ice-
smoothed stones, the discarded penguin feathers, the broken petrel egg. Lucia de
Leiris, an American natural history artist, has much in common with Edward
Wilson in her portrayal of birds and seals, whilst some of the scientists themselves
have remarkable artistic talents such as Richard Laws, whose zoological expertise
lends accuracy to his paintings of elephant seal behaviour.
