The challenges facing humans today are often expressed as food, water and
energy security and the relevance of Antarctica to these three issues is not
obvious at
first glance. Certainly there are marine food resources, such as krill, that
could be harvested sustainably. But incorporation of Antarctica into Earth System
models is essential to predict accurately future climate scenarios for the whole
planet. Sea-level rise and ocean circulations are just two examples where the
processes in Antarctica are fundamentally important globally. Accurate prediction
allows humans to make the optimum climate adaptation and mitigation choices.
Thus Antarctic is remote but more relevant to humanity than it has ever been.
