There is no single centralised database for Antarctica. Instead, SCAR, recognising
that there is a wide range of data and database systems in its member countries, has
organised a meta-data directory the Antarctic Master Directory (AMD), to guide
people to much of the data that has been collected. This is a web-based metadata
catalogue populated with contributions from National Antarctic Data Centres
( http://gcmd.gsfc.nasa.gov/KeywordSearch/Home.do?
Portal=amd&MetadataType=0 ). National Antarctic Data Centres (NADCs) or
their equivalents have now been established in most SCAR countries, and
-
together
with the AMD
comprise the Antarctic Data Directory System (ADDS). Growing
steadily, the ADDS is intended eventually to provide an index for access to all
Antarctic data, no matter where or how they are stored. SCAR recently published
a SCAR Data and Information Management Strategy designed by SCADM to
help all Treaty nations improve the way data and information is managed and
exchanged.
