All albatross species are long-lived (possibly over 50 years), delay their breeding
until they are 7
10 years old and rear only a single chick, making their
populations very vulnerable to mortality caused by
-
fisheries. Since all populations
are declining, some very rapidly, international activities have focussed on
mitigating the deaths by promoting changes in
fishing practices and, although
this has had a positive effect for licensed trawlers, unlicensed pirate boats
continue to kill many birds.
