more environmentally sustainable and, importantly, impose a smaller carbon burden.
But how committed was the Government in involving the UK science community
in achieving this policy goal? The document's introductory section (page 7) stated
that 'sustainability is not an exact science and is still developing', which is a fair
comment. What perplexed some involved in science policy was that the appended
list of those to whom the consultation was sent did not include the chartered bodies
