The procedure of preparing the specimens is the same for all the tests: the soil is
passed through a 5 mm sieve to eliminate the largest grains, then it is mixed with the
adequate quantity of water and lastly it is placed in a sealed plastic bag for at least
24 hours to obtain a uniform humidity. Two mold dimensions were used to prepare
the samples: 70 mm in diameter and 140 mm in height for SPTT and TTu at ECP,
160 mm in diameter and 320 mm in height for LPTT at IST. The small specimens
were compacted to the chosen dry density in three layers by a 24 N weight falling
from a height of 305 mm, with the required number of blows per layer. The large
samples were compacted in seven layers by means of a vibrating hammer with a
