Fig. 6.5 Classic barchans in Egypt (quite possibly among those
studied by Bagnold himself) viewed in the gloomy dusk from an
airliner. Note the spectrum of sizes, the en echelon arrangement of close
barchans. Some are almost dome-like with a small slip face, others have
long arms trailing into linear-like forms. A couple of barchan sets
towards the top have merged, while several of the larger barchans have
small bedforms ('elemental dunes') forming on their surface. In the
