Part IV
Dune Studies
In this section we review the various methods and
approaches used to study dunes. A staggering range of
scientific techniques have been brought to bear in the study
of dunes and the sand and wind that create them. We have
arranged these in four broad categories: field investigations,
laboratory investigations, remote sensing, and models. In all
these areas there has been remarkable progress has been
made in the last couple of decades.
Inevitably, there are some inconvenient borderline cases
where particular methodologies may transcend this some-
what arbitrary classification; for example, is a ground-
penetrating radar better discussed in the context of other
radars (remote sensing techniques) or in the context of other
field methods? Similarly, wind tunnel measurements are
most usually laboratory techniques, but portable field wind
tunnels
have
also
been
used.
We

indulgence
in
recognizing
that
everything
has
to
go
somewhere, and we hope they can find what they seek.
