book. In this chapter, I want us to focus on
one particular aspect of the story of Diamond: the
connections it exposes between science and
atmospheric pollution.
The levels of air pollution in Diamond, and the
broader industrial region within which it is located,
have generated problems for scientists trying to
assess and monitor the quality of the area's air. In
