of nuclear power that has been evident from the
1970s onwards). While nuclear energy may well
provide a more sustainable energy option than
fossil fuels, the fact that nuclear power also relies
on mineral fuels, such as uranium, means that it
too will experience peak output limits (Heinberg,
2007).
Patterns of mineral fuel use and supply become
more complex when they are considered in
geographical terms. While the extraction, supply
and use of mineral fuels is now a global affair, it is
marked by significant geographical differences.
Figure 2.4 reveals the regional shares of total
energy use (in terms of both mineral fuels and
all others) in 1973 and 2010. The figure illustrates
