Since the beginning of
this century the melting
of the Greenland Ice
Sheet (which would raise
sea level by twenty feet
if the whole ice body
melted) has been ac-
celerating. Helping this
process along are more
or less cylindrical vertical
shafts called moulins
that allow meltwater to
flow to the base of the
glacier, lubricating the
ice's path to the sea.
