slopes of Mauna loa, hawaii
Charles David Keeling, a visionary scientist
from Scripps Institution of Oceanography,
measured the carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in the
relatively unpolluted atmosphere at the top
of Mauna Loa beginning in 1958. Mountain-
top measurements now show that CO 2
concentration in the atmosphere has steadily
increased and is nearly 390 parts per million
compared to 315 parts per million in 1958.
