sions, and weakening any commitment to
massive investment in new and sustainable
technologies. Those technologies can prom-
ise a quality life for the planet's inhabitants
without drastically altering the climate.
The increasingly serious attention being
paid to geoengineering solutions indicates
that we may be approaching a point where
catastrophic global climate change cannot
be avoided. The immediate challenge is for
the planet's nations and political leaders to
find the courage to put the future of hu-
manity ahead of their own short-term eco-
nomic interests. Only then will we be able
to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emis-
sions and move beyond the fossil fuel age
to a future of sustainable energy.
