Colors indicate the abundance of enzymes binding a specific compound relative to present
day. Following this scheme, the utilization of oxygen, and a variety of nitrogen and C1 com-
pounds (carbon compounds with only one carbon atom, including methane) evolved rather
late, while manganese and sulfur-compound utilization evolved early. Slightly modified from
