crates stored on the floor to allow for air circulation and prevent rot.

You can make an inground root cellar when a basement is not available (see
fig. 3-2
). The
main things to watch for are water infiltration/drainage, pest barriers, and adequate insulation
from the top to prevent freezing. Some people bury garbage cans or old refrigerators. In severe
climates, the storage container should be insulated from above with hay bales, rigid styrene
foam panels, or at least one foot of loose snow.
