FM radio, US and Canadian “all-hazards alert,” and other scanning bands including military
and civilian aircraft. One such all-purpose emergency radio product that is reasonably priced
and includes all of these functions is the Uniden Bearcat BC72XLT portable handheld radio
scanner (
fig. 9-3
). Most of the newer multipurpose scanners that pick up NOAA radio, have a
user-selectable option for emitting an audible alarm signal and displaying descriptive informa-
tion whenever a local hazard alert is issued, and they also include the ability to scan local two-
way radio emergency communications. Such a scanner could be a valuable item to have on
hand in the event of a local disaster!
