Classic propane or gasoline-powered camping lanterns (see fig. 4-17 ) provide an excellent
source of bright light for both off-grid and backup applications. In these types of lanterns, the
burning fuel causes a silk mantle to glow brightly, giving off an extremely bright light. Make
sure that you stock several spare mantles, because once a mantle has been lit for the first time,
it becomes extremely fragile and small shocks to the lantern may cause the mantle to fracture,
requiring its replacement with a new one. Electric lanterns using either LED or compact fluor-
escent bulbs are energy efficient battery-powered devices that provide long-lasting alternatives
to traditional candles, oil lamps, and mantle-type lanterns. A couple of excellent suppliers for
basic self-reliant supplies and tools, such as these backup sources for light and heat, are Leh-
man's ( www.lehmans.com ) and the Cumberland General Store ( www.cumberlandgeneral.com ) .
