Whether static, contributory or dynamic, each
data-collection method shows differences in terms of its
accessibility and modification prior to mapping. As to the
creation of an application, it involves a certain degree of
bricolage, where the cartographer has to personalize it,
manage contingency and ensure the scientificity of his map.
Modulating all three activities, the map oscillates between the
subjective expression of individuals and the demands of
objectivity. The bricolage thus aims to preserve the validity of
the map despite the idiosyncratic expression of cartographers
and the technical contingencies of the data and base maps. As
a result, mapping mashup maps show facts, less from a “top-
down” approach - taking for granted the scientificity of
maps - than from a “bottom-up” strategy, finding ways to
ensure their validity by explaining their tricks to create their
maps.
