The commitment to cross-check official data confirms the
findings of a study by Kera et al. on the members of the
Safecast association. In this study, the authors underlined
that the reasons behind Safecast's involvement in radiation
measuring and mapping were not to challenge the
government, but rather “[…] to do something, to participate,
to be part of the solution, to be useful to the community, to
have a feeling of empowerment through participation […]”
[ KER 13: 108 ] . The same rationale is found in the radiation
cartographers' engagement.
7.2.2. Discussing maps from their data
Maps are excluded if the data sources used are being
questioned. In a comment on the EX-SKF Website about an
article on the state of reactor no. 1 in the power station, a
Web user wonders why there are no data on reactor no. 4 on
the atmc.jp map (Table 6.1, map no. 2). Someone replies that
the data seen on the map are provided by TEPCO and are
therefore not reliable.
