The issue of induced seismicity has recently been linked to the injection
and disposal of produced waters from oil and gas fields. 24
Unlike sequestration in existing oil and gas fields, injecting into deep
saline reservoirs may take place in regions of the country that have not
experienced drilling activities. Public opposition may arise to activities on the
surface—such as land clearing, building of new roads, transport of heavy
equipment, and operation of drill rigs—but also to the concept of disposing
