Arabian Sea and then re-curved eastwards and weakened gradually. It moved
parallel and close to Makaran coast and crossed Pakistan coast as a depression
on 6 th June. It then moved east-northeastwards across south Pakistan and
Rajasthan and weakened gradually into a well marked low pressure area over
east Rajasthan and adjoining northwest Madhya Pradesh on 7 th June. The
cyclone Phet had the rarest of the rare track in Arabian Sea as per the recorded
history during 1877-2009. Figure 1 shows the track of Phet which had one of
the longest tracks in recent years. The life period of the cyclone was also longer.
As a result of such unique track, it had two landfalls and affected three countries
like Oman, Pakistan and India. Due to this, there was fairly widespread rain
with isolated heavy rains over two states of India i.e. Rajasthan on 6 th and 7 th
and over Gujarat on 6 th June.
Since the system crossed the Pakistan coast near Karachi the area around
the track was mostly desert region where dense rain gauge network is not
available. But accurate estimate of precipitation over varying space and time
