applications of the 3DVAR system have been reported in Barker et al. (2004).
The B statistics are calculated through National Meteorological Centre (NMC)
method (Parrish and Derber, 1992) over Indian monsoon region (Routray et
al., 2011). In the 3DVAR assimilation system, the error statistics are generally
calculated off-line and significant tuning is required to optimize performance
for a particular application and also specific region.
4. Numerical Experiments
For this study, three numerical experiments are carried out using ARW (version
3.3) and 3DVAR modelling system with single domain at 09 km horizontal
resolution. These are designed to assess the effect of radiance assimilation
relative to GTS data assimilation. The model domain configured for this study
is shown in Fig. 1e. The WRF-3DVAR analysis and WRF model configuration
along with the parameterization schemes used in the present study is
summarized in Table 1. The first experiment, control (CNTL), uses the initial
