shall cover 86 km 2 . Similarly, for 3, 4 and 5 metres rise, 144.6 km 2 , 234 km 2
and 320.6 km 2 shall become submerged, respectively. To validate this model,
results obtained from inundation analysis are compared with 2004 tsunami run
up data, and found to be comparable with the simulated inundation. This
underlines the validity of the model developed in this study. For 5 m run up
height of inundation, nearly seven towns and 63 villages are expected to be
severely affected. The total number of houses and total population in these
villages and towns are 1,32,939 and 5,99,682, respectively based on year 2001
Census data. This reflects the severity of the ground situation, and necessitates
the need for public awareness about the impending vulnerability risk along
this coastal belt. Further, it also underlies the need to prohibit all developmental
activities in vulnerable areas.
